I.O.M Summer Series Round 4. 16th May 2021

Not what was forecasted !!!!!!. Chris Elliott RO, and the weather forecast suggested earlier in the week 10mph gusting 16mph, dream on, standard weather forecast predicting hell and then it turns into nothing, Chris did a great job of getting racing in, and on occasion we beat all the way around the two laps or reached or had a run, the breeze came in from all directions at once on occasions. Major concentration on your jibs tailtails was essential. I believe 8 races were completed with the usual suspects near or at the front for the majority of the racing. Pete W 65 had a new suit of moulded sails, from Europe and they seemed to work very well, not the same can be said of the skipper when the conditions became mirror like. Tim H 44 was regular near or at the front together with Chris E 74, quite a feat considering he was also running the racing. Write up by Pete W many thanks

Pete W 65 started well to take the first race in very little breeze closely followed by Pete C 110 who also had a set of moulded sails. ( I am Saying nothing !!!) Tim H 44 took third spot, but won race two ,, as Pete said above conditions were very light and flukey and one minute you would be king and the next no where. Around race 4 we had an almighty thunderstorm and hail stones and the wind went 180 degrees and Chris changed the course. Pete W certainly had problems with this course and posted his worst results while Chris E posted his best, but by race 7 the breeze what there was , returned to the South West, As an observer,, the racing was interesting to watch, and I am sure very frustrating for the Skippers.

It was a good turnout and could easily have been 16/17 skippers out but maybe the weather man who took over from Michael Fish scared them off, Last two races were won by the Sedici of Pete W, perhaps more may be said about those sails from Europe ???? It was tight at the top 1 point seperated 1st and 2nd , results below

Well done to the race team and all helpers especially Roger B , and thanks to all skippers for making it a pleasant morning Great to see Roger Bacon back racing.

Pictures thanks to Alan Edgar .

After the racing 3 were left, 139, 65,162. We had a 3 boat tuning session with the most consistent breeze of the day. Heavy rain stopped play about 1530.

DF 95 Summer Series Round two 9th May 2021

Not what was forecast , Thats what we all said on arrival, but the breeze eventually filled in before the start to give 11 skippers some excellent racing straight up and down the East Bank. We welcomed a visitor Dave Geldart who is fairly new to radio sailing, but has some experience of Vane sailing, we hope he enjoyed his day and look forward to welcoming him back.

Most skippers started on A rigs and Pete 678 was quickly into his stride with two straight wins, if racing had stopped there Roger 448 would have been more than happy with two straight 3rds, that in fact went on to 4 straight 3rds very consistant racing, well done . After a not so good 1st race Jen 69 finally found her feet and was only twice out of the top 4 in 12 races giving Pete a very hard time even though there were some occasions where a dubious call caused confusion ( private joke) . Dave No Number at this stage was having some good races and had taken to radio like a duck to water, and we could tell he will be a force to be reckoned with in the very near future.

Mike 839 and Greg had a few close races with Greg showing a vast increase in form as had Roger Bowtle both showing well in some races, Billy Mac was just not at the races today and admitted it , Alan 438 , well it is always more difficult when you are OOD with other things are on your mind Alan 890 is still finding his feet after such a long layoff , and it was great to see Pete Webster back again after so much time away from the sport , Ed 31 had a problem and departed early. The wind strengthened as the morning wore on and several skippers went to B suit for two or three races before going back to A suit .

A great days racing the weather could not have been kinder , A very narrow victory on the day to Pete with Jen in close attendance, she will be studying the results carefully to see where she lost the points ( just look at the Discards )

Many thanks to Allan and Mick C and all the helpers who made the day happen and many thanks to all the skippers. Roger Bowtle needs a special mention because in race 7 he had his first win ever at Lincoln , well done Roger the only way is up .

I.O.M Summer Series , round 3, 4th May 2021

A cool morning greeted 12 skippers with a light wind from the west.  We would have had 13, but one skipper  brought the wrong boat, but he did win the £25 first prize on the Scotto, well done Geoff Burrell , so it was worth his drive to the lake.  Second prize of £10 going to Bill McPhee.

Rob Wilson got off to an excellent start with two wins, closely followed by Keith Holmes and Chris Elliott.   Very light winds from the start and to make it worse from all over the place making the OOD much more difficult , generally from the West and when I say increased thoughout the morning I mean from 2 to maybe 4 knots except for the last couple races when we saw 6/ 7 knots.

It was great to see excellent racing with many battles going on throughout the fleet, but the morning went to Rob with 5 wins from 10 races and going about his sailing in his usual calm way. Keith was second with the Sedici and sailed very consistantly only two points adrift, with Chris in third spot. Chris Graves did very well with his ( By now very old BP) and Dave Rigby I am sure found it not as easy to be OOD and race at the same time .

There were faces missing and this fleet could so easily have been 16/17 Skippers are starting to come out of the woodwork gradually with Lockdown easing and it was great to see Alan Edgar , Gordon Bennett , and Ed Whitaker at lakeside even though not racing. Unfortunatly we have got into a habit of not doing anything on Sunday mornings and need to give our selves a good shake up to start getting back into the habit again . The racing at Lincoln is second to none so lets all shake a leg and get back to some great racing as we had today.

Many thanks to the OOD’s and all the helpers and especially to the skippers who made the morning worthwhile. Congratulation to Rob Wilson 3 wins on the trot now in the series . Results and some pics below .
