TIPS FOR THE OFFICER OF THE DAY & RACE TEAM

Please read this carefully

As we promised at the 2016 A.G.M we would formulate a duties roster so that all Lincoln Model Yacht club skippers can get involved and learn more about how the club runs and what it takes to organize and run a small club event, typical of a Sunday mornings racing. ( that was 6 years ago )  Should you not be able to do your duty for the day in Question we would ask that you please try to arrange a swap with another skipper. Skippers and mates names will be added to the calendar so that you can see your days well in advance . SCROLL DOWN TO See below a series of pages that will help you carry out the task that is needed, you will also see suggestions for coarse setting and also strict rules for using the dingy , a Black folder will be in the  clubhouse  with all the info below on it for you to look at while on site at the lake ,, please note also, you can enlist the help of other skippers who may be loitering with intent.

All names for duties are on the calendar on this website and get updated as and when .

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR DUTY OFFICER AND MATE

Arrive in good time, Get toilet and clubhouse opened up

1/ Get the Sign Board put out at the end of the lane. it lives in the clubhouse when not in use . you may not think it important but it gets us new members .

2/ The green dingy  is NOT LOCKED on the bank ,   Electric motor in clubhouse and batt are under shelf, oars are in the loft space

3/  take a deep breath

4/ Get race starter set up on tripod on the bank where you believe the start will take place, attach battery and leave batt box on the ground not on top of the starter, when finished for the day ensure batt is put back in top cupboard on charge and  countdown system is put back on the rack where you found it. Not left on the floor .

5/ Get the score sheet in red folder, , and chair/s put in place where you believe the finish will be. You will need to fill in the score sheet with all entrants and their sail numbers. dont forget the detail of what race it is and the date. Ensure all skippers have signed in !!!!!!

6/ Sort out a suitable course for racing for the day and get help from more experienced guys if necessary. there are plenty of bouys around including throw ins, so there is no excuse for not laying a decent course SEE THE SEPARATE COURSE SHEET HELPERS IN THIS FILE.

BEFORE GETTING IN THE DINGY READ THE RULES OVERLEAF

When racing has finished, please get the Sign Board in and return the dingy/Trailer and tractor to the barn at the farm, the ignition keys should be left in the ignition on the tractor but please ensure it is turned off. Ensure Toilet and shed are locked when everything has been put away.

COURSE SUGGESTIONS

See courses drawings below get some ideas . The big green bits is the are the Banks where we normally park our cars , two of the courses show winds from the South sector and two show winds from the North sector , It is rare that we sail from the South Bank but there is a course for that as well .

The notes below are printed once only, but are applicable to all courses shown below

IF USING THE CLUB DINGHY TO ADJUST THE POSITION OF THE CLUB BUOYS, REFER TO THE CLUB RULES PRIOR TO DOING SO

Guides

1: Set the start line 1st

2: The start line should be approx. 85 degree to the wind, giving equal opportunity to all boats at both ends of the start line.

3: The start line should be 150% of the number of boat lengths (IOM 20 boats = 30 metres start line length.

4: Use the Flag on the bank to sight line (to see if any boats are over the start line prior to the start.

5: The windward mark should be an equal distance from both ends of the start line.

6: The gate should be set parallel to the start line.

7: Before the first race give a small briefing talking the skippers through the course.

Commence the starting box off at 6 minute count down.

Remember, if you change the course throughout the day, notify the skippers of any changes.

8: Race length should be about 15 minutes.

9: If one or two boats have been in difficulty, but are still racing and are a considerably distance behind the rest of the fleet which has finished. Consider finishing these boat(s) in their position on water and restart the 6 minute countdown.

Hints:

1: A long 1st beat helps to avoid collisions at the windward mark.

2: A wing mark at the windward end of the course will help split the fleet and avoid further collisions.

3: Try to keep boats beating or running, reaching courses do not create good racing.

4: If all boats are at one end of the start line, or there are lots of general recalls, it is usually the start line that is wrong, not the skippers. Look to adjusting the start line to avoid bunching at one end of the line. Use of the Flag, rather than Buoy S2 could be useful for a quick adjustment.

5: It’s very rare to get a perfect course but the best courses avoid collisions, arguments and give  the best racing, and getting it right is worth the effort.

6: Setting a god course comes with practice – have a go. If in doubt ask one of the more experienced skippers, who will be glad to offer a help in hand.
