Midland District/LRSC Winter Series Pop-up Event – 4th January 2026

Report by Martyn Aspinall.
The weather conditions gave us an auspicious start to the day, with a very light wind and a temperature below -4 degrees which allowed ice to form around the edge of the lake. The wind increased and the rising sun rectified this situation however and allowed racing to start at the scheduled time. A course was set with a beat and run utilising most of the length of the South bank. Course length 2 ½ laps taking around ten minutes.
Tim Hand took the first race followed by Peter Stollery and Josh King. Peter and Josh then proceeded to give something of a masterclass, taking most of the first and second positions in the following 14 races. Tim also took the sixth race, but the only other person to gain a race win was Rob Wilson, who commanded the last race from start to finish.
Race winning was only a small factor in this very enjoyable day however. The sun shone, the wind stayed with us and the sporting attitude of the competitors gave everybody a good day of sailing with a chance to do well. The racing was close and the competition was fierce in a very pleasant way. The cold was largely forgotten about!
The final result was Peter Stollery in first position with 19 points, Josh King, second, with 25 points and Tim Hand (as the first Midland District boat) in third place with 60 points. An inspiring practice for the IOM Worlds at Datchet you guys!
Many thanks to the helpers in setting up and putting away the gear. To Jen, for the race day starting, finishing and race management in which she was ably assisted by Alan, Adrian Cripps and Terry King, who will hopefully be supplying some photos after his and Josh’s long journey home. Special thanks to Darin for the background work in setting the day up and for the course laying/boat rescues and general operational advice on the day.
